In the Beginning
Kind of cheesy I know, but I had no idea where to start so “In the beginning” seemed like as good a place as any. Actually, the idea for this blog grew out of something that has yet to happen. Like a lot of people, I’ve toyed with the idea of writing a book. I’ve heard it said that we all have one good book in us, but putting it down on paper is another story (no pun intended). I’ve tried to start my infamous book a few times, but like so many “great ideas”, it was going nowhere. Then one day, while I was watching a few YouTube videos (which you’ll find out I do quite often), I stumbled onto an interview with Frank Schaeffer, a best-selling author and director. During the interview, he made a comment that stuck with me. He mentioned that he tries to write something every day. The goal wasn’t to write a book. The goal was to write…something. It was more of an exercise in self-discipline than a project. So that got me thinking. What if I could develop the habit of writing something every day? I would probably get better at writing, and eventually, it could add up to something more. Maybe even a book.
I was never one to keep a diary or journal, but I have spent a fair amount of my time working with computers and building websites, so a blog became the obvious choice. As you will learn, my desire to write a book came out of what you might call a “come to Jesus” moment. It wasn’t a “run to church” moment as much as it was a “let’s get real” moment. It was a questioning of what I had been told growing up, and a questioning of what I had heard as an adult. My “come to Jesus” moment had me questioning just about everything. In fact, one of the titles for my unwritten book was “Atheists Ask the Best Questions” because that’s where the rubber hits the road. I didn’t care about the feel-good stuff. I wanted answers to the tough questions. I was starting at square one.
The name for my blog came from a comment by Jordan Peterson. He was talking about how various religious groups approach Christianity when he said, “…the Orthodox would say that you should pick up your damn cross and stumble uphill…” That got my attention. Jordan Peterson is no theologian, but that resonated with me. The best we can hope to do is stumble uphill. So, I registered the URL.
